Reading comprehension - SPORTS

Reading Activities - SPORTS

New sport – new you!

John Brosco doesn’t like sport. At school, PE is his worst subject. He isn’t good at football or volleyball – he prefers reading and painting. He can’t run fast and he swims badly. His seven-year-old brother can run faster than him!

Many people say they can’t do sport when this is not true. Everyone can do a sport. Try a few and you will find one you like! There is something for everyone! We asked John, ‘Will you try a different sport?’ He wasn’t sure at first, but in the end he agreed. John loves animals so we chose horse-riding as his new sport.

On a sunny morning we took John to the horse-riding school near his house. John’s horse, Brown Beauty, was friendly and quiet – very important for people who are learning to ride. At first, John was very nervous and couldn’t climb up on to the horse, but he soon started to relax and enjoy himself. After thirty minutes he could ride his horse quite fast without falling off! He looked relaxed and happy!

Many people think that riding a horse can be dangerous. It can be if your horse is nervous, but if you have a good teacher and wear the right clothes (a helmet and jeans) it is quite safe. You don’t have to buy expensive equipment and it is wonderful exercise.

‘Was it fun?’ we ask John at the end of his lesson. ‘It was fantastic!’ he says. ‘I’m coming back next week!’ ‘I’m going to pay for my next lesson now!’
